Avalanche warning for region Lofoten og Vesterålen Monday 20.01.2020

Danger level 4 - High avalanche danger

Published:
High temperatures and rain well into the high alpine increases the risk of naturally releases wet avalanches. In Vesterålen, some larger naturally released dry slab avalanches are possible in the high alpine.

Avalanche problems

Wet snow (slab avalanches)

You can very easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Water pooling in/above snow layers

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3).

Poor bonding between layers in wind deposited snow

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Sunday 19. January 2020

Mountain weather

Sunday 19. January 2020

5 mm precipitation, up to 10 mm in the most exposed areas. Fresh breeze from south, changing to moderate gale from the south during the evening. -5 °C to 2 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Monday 20. January 2020

15 mm precipitation, up to 25 mm in the most exposed areas. Moderate gale from southwest, changing to gale from the west during the evening. -3 °C to 3 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
